▉Description:
The Cloned Desktop Filament Extruder MK2 from ARTME 3D is a project that is available as a kit. ​It is a plastic extruder in an unbeatably small but powerful design for producing 3D printer filament with 1.75mm and 2.85mm diameter. ​It is delivered as a kit for self-assembly.
▉Special feature:
The extruder works with an extruder screw with a compression zone and is made of stainless steel. This allows you to process both pellets and self-made (shredded) granules from 3D printing waste (regrind). A winding unit is also integrated to wind the filament directly onto a spool. And that with a footprint of just 31 x 46 cm.

▉Drive:
The drive consists of a powerful and continuously variable Nema23 stepper motor with planetary gear, which is controlled via a digital stepper motor driver. ​The winding unit and pulling unit are each driven by Nema17 stepper motors.
▉Steering
An MKS Gen L board with LCD display takes over the control. The winding works automatically. ​After the filament length has been adjusted, the extruder switches off automatically. ​When you purchase the kit, the control is already programmed and tested. The firmware used can be found in the documentation. The menu language on the control display is currently only available in English.
▉Processable materials and extruder screw options
The extruder has two different extruder screw options, which must be selected when purchasing:
The “high compression” extruder screw (compression ratio 3:1) is tailored to the processing of shredded 3D printing waste made of PLA, ABS and PETG. In addition, certain plastics in pellet form such as PLA types (optimized for 3D printing), ABS and PP can also be processed. ​The “low compression” extruder screw (compression ratio 2:1) is tailored to the processing of plastics in pellet form such as PLA, ABS, ASA, PETG, PP. The processing of nylon, PA, PS or other ​technical plastics cannot be guaranteed, but is often possible. However, it may be that the extruder can extrude these materials, but the winding and calibration into dimensionally stable filament does not work. This is because these plastics have different viscosities or solidify very quickly. This is where the calibration and winding of this system reaches its limits. Therefore, ​the processing of these materials cannot currently be guaranteed.
▉Material requirements for stable operation
Roughly summarized, the material used must be prepared as follows to ensure stable operation 、of the extruder:
1.The material used must be dried. Plastic absorbs moisture from the air. This can result in problems such as bubbling and uneven extrusion.
2.Before adding material to the hopper, it must be sieved witha sieve. The mesh size should be approx. 4.5 to 5mm. Plastic pellets also need to be sieved. Because if there is only one grain that exceeds the size, it can lead to uneven extrusion or clogging of the extruder.
3.The material used must be clean and dust-free. The extruder has a melt filter built into the nozzle. However, this is not designed to completely filter contaminated material. The melt filter only ensures that the filament produced does not clog the printer nozzle if small impurities are contained in the granules.
▉Power supply
The extruder is operated with 24V safety extra-low voltage and, due to its high efficiency, it requires little power (80 to 140 watts), so that it can be operated with an inexpensive power supply, for example. The power supply is NOT included for legal and technical reasons. Please use a closed desktop power supply (like those found on laptops). The power supply must have 24Vdc output voltage. The output current must be at least 6 amps. Or in other words have an output of at least 144 watts. It may happen that in countries with a mains voltage of 100 to 120 volts, the power supply does not provide full performance. Therefore, I recommend using a high-quality power supply with a mains voltage of 100 to 120V or using a more powerful power ​supply (more than 6 amps output current) .
▉Nozzle size
Attention, the nozzle size only roughly determines the filament diameter. Some types of plastic expand as they leave the nozzle. For more details see the operating instructions in the documentation. The kit is supplied with two nozzle sizes based on empirical values:
· Nozzle size 1.5mm results in 1.75mm filament with ABS ​· Nozzle size 1.7mm results in 1.75mm filament with PLA ​· The nozzles can be replaced or drilled out cheaply and ​quickly. (Standard 3D printer nozzle, E3D V6 Style)

▉Additional accessories and tools required
If you purchase a kit from ARTME 3D, you will need the following materials, which are not included in the scope of delivery, in order to be able to set up and operate the extruder:
• Table power supply 24Vdc 6A. The power supply is NOT included for legal and technical reasons. Please use a closed desktop power supply (like those found on laptops). ​The power supply must have 24Vdc output voltage. The output current must be at least 6 amps. Or in other words have an output of at least 144 watts. It may happen that in countries with a mains voltage of 100 to 120 volts, the power supply does not provide full performance. ​Therefore, I recommend using a high-quality power supply with a mains voltage of 100 to 120V or using a more powerful power supply (more than 6 amps output current) . ​If you have the installation done by a specialist, you can also use open switching power supplies like those found in common 3D printers. However, during installation you come into contact with components that are connected to mains voltage. Therefore there is danger to life. Only have this type of power supply installed by a professional.
• The 3D printed components have to be printed yourself. (white parts in the photos) You can find the files for download here . The printer's print bed must be at least 200x200mm in size.
• An empty filament spool (inner hole diameter 50 to 60mm)
• Required tools:
• hammer
• If necessary, wear a dust mask because you are handling rock wool
• Access to a vise is an advantage.
• Needle-nose pliers and combination pliers are an advantage

• Electronic caliper for measuring the filament diameter (good quality!)

▉Required skills and level of difficulty of construction
• Printing a large number of parts (possibly several days of printing time and approx. 1.3 to 1.7 kg of material consumption) The print quality and dimensional accuracy must be good. The printer must be well aligned and the axes must be perpendicular to each other.
• The reworking of 3D printed parts.
• Wiring of the electronics according to instructions.
• Similar to a 3D printer, you need to learn a few basics to successfully produce filament. When 3D printing, the most important things are, for example, bed leveling, the adhesion of the first layer, the print settings and the component orientation. Without these basics, it will hardly be possible to achieve good 3D prints in the long term. Therefore, please read the operating instructions.

Depending on your experience in assembling such kits, you will need to allow between 5 and 10 hours for assembly.
